Toshiba Picks MontaVista's Hard Hat Linux for Printer, Set Top Box, and Digital TV Embedded Solutions

TOKYO & SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2001-- MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced a technical and marketing collaboration with Toshiba Corporation, a world leader in high technology, to develop advanced embedded products for the printer, set top box, and digital television markets.

Toshiba and MontaVista will launch their alliance by porting MontaVista's Hard Hat(TM) Linux® to Toshiba's TX39 and TX49 embedded processor families. In addition, Toshiba will designate Hard Hat Linux as one of the standard operating systems for its TX39 and TX49 processors.

``Printer and set top box OEMs and developers of other embedded computing applications are increasingly demanding Linux for their next-generation products,'' said Masafumi Watanabe, deputy general manager, of Toshiba Corporation. ``We are working with MontaVista to provide more comprehensive support for our current and future customers, not only in Japan but throughout Asia and the world.''

``Continuing our leadership role in embedded systems, we support the most advanced products including Toshiba's TX39/49 embedded processors,'' affirmed Sheila Baker, vice president marketing, MontaVista Software. ``Together, Toshiba and MontaVista can reduce time-to-market and lower total costs for embedded developers by providing industry-leading products and services.''

The two companies have already begun the joint development process and Toshiba will release Hard Hat Linux-supported TX39 and TX49 processors, beginning in September of this year.

About Hard Hat Linux

MontaVista recently announced Hard Hat Linux, Version 2.0, the first embedded operating system and development tool suite based on the new Linux 2.4 kernel. HHL 2.0 boasts unrivaled development support for embedded processor architectures, CPU boards and software components, with more than 480 fully tested and supported host-target combinations. The feature-rich release enables a wide variety of embedded applications, providing a standard platform for designs in communications infrastructure, networking, consumer electronics, instrumentation and control.

About the TX39/49 processors

Toshiba's TX39 and TX49 RISC processors boast high performance and low power consumption and are based, respectively, on MIPS32 and MIPS64 architectures. The TX39 family is especially suitable for mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDA), set top boxes (STB), laser printers (LPB), and automobile navigation applications, while the TX49 family works best for laser printers, plain paper copiers (PPC), digital television (DTV), video game consoles, networking, and set top boxes.
